Christine Schub · Abstract Paintings

Original abstract oil paintings

Paintings that begin with a feeling.

No preconceived notion, no sketch, no photo. Christine Schub layers oil paint on linen, canvas and Duron board until each piece finds its own shape, sometimes over days, weeks or even months.

“Where does it all come from, what is your inspiration?” These are questions I am often asked… to which I reply… “It is a gift.”Christine Schub

The process

Lean to rich, layer by layer

Christine works on stretched canvas or linen for larger pieces, and on Duron hardboard for smaller ones. Each painting begins with oil paint thinned with mineral spirits or turpentine and linseed oil, then grows through successively richer layers of pigment.

  1. A feelingThe impetus to pick up the brush and lay down shapes and drips of color.
  2. Lean first layersOil paint thinned with mineral spirits and linseed oil.
  3. Richer layersPigment is added, piece by piece, as the painting unfolds.
  4. “Quitting time”Weeks or months later, the painting is finished, or nearly.
